Atomic Physics

Atomic Physics is a cornerstone of Modern Physics since the early 1900s and a field of a continuing rapid development stretching from the theoretical aspects to the technological implications. You will gain insights in modern Atomic Physics using theoretical, computational and experimental tools.

In this course, you will acquire a deeper knowledge of modern atomic physics. A central theme is the level structure of atoms including hyperfine structure. This is treated theoretically in a quantum mechanical description, numerically in a computer exercise using the Dirac-Fock approach, by analysis of spectroscopic data and experimentally by laser saturation spectroscopy. Another part of the course gives an introduction to the theory of atom-atom collisions, as well as collisions between atoms and other particles. Furthermore, the course covers the interaction between atoms and light. This includes a deepened understanding of selection rules, the optical Bloch equations, absorption of light, cooling and trapping of atoms. Finally, the course includes a survey over selected parts of contemporary research in atomic physics. This course is given in English.
