My main research interest is to identify the impacts of climatic and environmental change on human and animal populations throughout the Holocene and to explore human responses to the changing faunal and natural environment. I use a multidisciplinary approach to address my research questions by combining archaeology, zooarchaeology and bioarchaeology, with particular focus on the application of isotope analyses to archaeological teeth and bones. My specialisations in terms of methodology and original contributions is the combination of zooarchaeology and especially marine mammal anatomy and ecology, isotope analyses, and archaeology to explore and interpret the impacts of climatic and environmental change on human and animal populations, such as diet adaptations, subsistence shifts, hunting patterns, population relocations, increases/decreases of populations, and even extinctions of species. Beyond that, my interests are wide. I am especially interested in increasing the understanding of past marine mammal exploitation and to reconstruct human exploitation of marine resources over time by studying hunting strategies and hunting methods, including artefacts related to hunting and fishing, analysis of bone lesions related to hunting or processing of the hunted prey, resource acquisition processes, and landscape use.  

Background

After finishing my graduate studies in archaeology and history of art at the University of Athens, Greece, 2000, I worked as a professional field archaeologist in various archaeological services (ephorates and museums) in Greece. In 2004, I completed a year of postgraduate studies focused on archaeozoology and maritime archaeology at Christian-Albrechts University (CAU) of Kiel, Germany, where I also completed the educational programme for scientific diving. In 2005, my PhD proposal was awarded a fellowship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and from 2008 I was awarded a scholarship, and became a member of the Graduate School “Human Development in Landscapes”, CAU, Kiel. With my interdisciplinary PhD thesis, I shed light on important aspects of human subsistence towards the end of the Mesolithic and the onset of the Neolithic in this region, including pottery production, hunting strategies, mobility, seasonality, territoriality and interactions with other cultures (Glykou 2016). In 2013, I started to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Archaeological Research Laboratory, Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies, Stockholm University where I took a hands-on training bioarchaeology. Since 2016 I work as researcher at the Archaeological Research Laboratory, where I have been contributing with research publications, new research ideas, acquisition of funding, and teaching.
