Professor Veerabhadan (Ram) Ramanathan, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

We are very proud to announce that Professor Veerabhadan (Ram) Ramanathan, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California is the 2018 Bert Bolin Climate Lecturer.

Svante Arrhenius, the Swedish Nobelist, laid the modern foundation for understanding the planetary warming effects of carbon dioxide,122 years ago. The work was carried on by another famous Swede and a climate scientist, Bert Bolin, who in 1990 took the science of climate change and its implications to the whole world as the first chairman of the IPCC, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Society has responded rather tepidly to the dangers of climate change, except for good examples like California and Sweden which have shown the world how to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other climate pollutants and still enjoy prosperous economies. Using data collected over the last three decades, I have concluded that unchecked climate change poses serious threats for our children and grand-children. However, there is still time to avoid catastrophic changes. I will describe ten solutions (developed with a team of fifty faculty from the University of California system), which if implemented with urgency, can protect the people as well as the ecosystems.

The Bert Bolin Lecture on Climate Research is given annually in May to commemorate professor Bert Bolin and his pioneering work for climate research at Stockholm University and internationally. The speaker is selected among prominent scientists within climate research by the Faculty of Science.
