Abstract: Nationalism is often regarded as something negative. It has been linked to fascism, autarchy and a conservative dimension, oligarchic and anti-popular. Although these dimensions do exist within nationalistic expressions, Rivarola's presentation gives a more nuanced picture. It makes a distinction between core and peripheral nationalisms. It points out changing forms of nationalism through time, as well as in different Latin American sub-regions. Towards its end, the lecture also focuses on the analysis of a particular kind of nationalism: Latin American continentalism.
