As a newly graduated preschool teacher, Ylva Novosel started working at a preschool in a multicultural area. Most of the children were born in Sweden, but spoke languages other than Swedish at home. Ylva noted that the children mixed different languages and expressions. The children's use of language fascinated her and she wondered if the preschool is particularly open to communication in different ways. As a preschool teacher, she was also interested in children's opportunities to communicate and explore the world using other forms of expression – what is sometimes called aesthetic learning processes.

- "I wanted to explore what happens to the children when they come to preschool but do not yet speak Swedish," says Ylva. This was the start of her doctoral thesis.
