Control or support? Problem-solving and professional judgments in adult social work team conferences

Abstract: This paper explores how care managers in team conferences collaboratively solve issues related to complex cases involving clients with cognitive decline, focusing on their professional roles and judgments. Team conferences in Swedish social work involve social workers assessing, interpreting, and discussing how to proceed with cases. Using conversation analysis of two sequences from 137 audio-recorded cases, we highlight how managers utilize conversational strategies, such as hypothetical talk and shared authority, when conveying institutional routines and offering advice. We also explore how care managers use expanding techniques to challenge proposed advice. This paper provides new insights into how organizational norms are reinforced and professional judgments are collaboratively constructed.

Comics as Materials for Educational Practice

For decades, comic books and graphic novels were dismissed as low-quality literature and art. From the 1950s until recently, parents were warned that comics could negatively impact children's language development and behavior. However, comics have since become a mainstream facet of popular culture and a growing subject of academic interest. This presentation will discuss two projects on the use of comics in education—one in senior high school (GY) and the other in primary school (Grades 4–6). Using video data, we will examine how comics can be effectively integrated into educational practices.
