STEM, widened-participation and inclusion

You are welcome to participate in a shared event with scholars from Stockholm university, KTH and University of Manchester.

The event concerns the topic of widened-participation and inclusion within the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), stretching from compulsory education to university and beyond.

As part of this project, Dr. Miguel Antonio Lim and Dr. Jessica Gagnon from The University of Manchester will give presentation on their own research concerning Widening participation and STEM.

The presentations are followed by snacks and drinks and the opportunity to mingle with our guests.

Bios

Dr Jessica Gagnon has worked in higher education in the US and UK for 20 years. She is a sociologist of higher education whose research is primarily focused on inequalities, particularly in STEM. Her recent projects include the RSC-funded LGBTQual+ project; the EPSRC-funded IGNITE+ (Innovation and Growth Needs Inclusion and engagement of all Talent in Energy); the NERC-funded E-DIAL project (Evaluating Diversity and Inclusion within the geochemistry Academic Ladder); the EPSRC-funded STEM Equals project, and the SLiC-funded See Yourself in STEM project. In addition to her research, she has taught at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. She grew up in a working-class, single mother family and is first in her family to attend university.

Dr Miguel Antonio Lim is Senior Lecturer in Education and Research Excellence Framework (REF) coordinator at the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) at the University of Manchester. He is co-convenor of the International Research and Researchers’ Network of the Society for Research into Higher Education. He is lead researcher for the ASEAN Secretariat and the EU-Support to Higher Education in ASEAN (EU SHARE) on internationalisation of HE in southeast Asia.
