Matt completed his PhD in 2007 at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island, USA. His thesis was on the paleoceanographic and geologic development of the Arctic Ocean during the Cenozoic. He joined the Department of Geological Sciences as a Research Scientist in 2012 after two years as a Lecturer at Cardiff University in the UK. His current research is focused on reconstructing the Quaternary glacial and environmental history of the Arctic Ocean using marine sediment cores and geophysical data. Matt has devoted considerable effort to the long-standing problem of dating Arctic Ocean sediments, and has worked across the Arctic on sedimentary process operating in the modern era to those active tens of millions of years ago. He co-manages the core-processing laboratory at the Department of Geological Sciences, and currently serves as the Swedish representative on the Science Support and Evaluation Committee for the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling.
