Abstract

On April 10, 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope released an image of what it looks like around the black hole M87*, located 55 million light years away from Earth. After Jonas Enander saw the image, he decided to write a book about these mysterious objects. He traveled to several telescopes that contributed to the image, interviewed leading scientists, and dug into archives to find out how human knowledge of and relationship to space black holes has changed over the years. The result was the book “Mörkret och människan: Om svarta hål och vår plats på jorden” (which translates to "Darkness and Man: Black Holes and Our Place on Earth"). In this lecture, Jonas Enander will talk about what we know about black holes today, their relationship to humans, and what future experiments may reveal about one of the greatest mysteries of the universe.
