Abstract

The last two weeks have seen an outpouring of solidarity with refugees from Ukraine. Two million people have crossed the borders into Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and elsewhere seeking refuge from the invasion and now war. The situation is dire. While Europe has relaxed asylum restrictions to welcome Ukrainians, refugees of color fleeing the same violence and previous conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan, for example, have faced closed doors and open hostility. The ARWG seminar series will host a conversation with Professor Shahram Khosravi, Social Anthropology, and Minna Seikkula, researcher at the Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations and Nationalism, to discuss the role of racism and racialization in response to refugees as well as acts of resistance.

Shahram Khosravi is Professor of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University and has written extensively on migration, human rights, forced displacement, the Middle East and Iran. Read more

Minna Seikkula, is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations and Nationalism, University of Helsinki, and has worked on antiracism and migrant activism in Europe. Read more

About the Anti-Racism Working Group Seminar Series

The Anti-Racism Working Group (ARWG) aims to recognize the structures and practices of racism within our field and confront it through the platforming of anti-racist efforts in Sociology and beyond. We invite academics, activists, and artists to share their experiences, research, reflect on recent work, and join in conversation.

Everyone is welcome. Students are particularly encouraged to attend and participate. For the foreseeable future, all seminars will take place over Zoom. To join our group email list and receive Zoom links please contact Vanessa Barker, vanessa.barker(a)sociology.su.se.
