Mikael Kalm will work primarily with the Doctoral School courses, the three conferences organised by the Doctoral School for the PhD students at the faculty, and with the Doctoral School's funding for quality assuring activities.

In addition to his assignment for the Doctoral School in the Humanities, Mikael Kalm is a senior lecturer at the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism, where he is Head of Subject for Swedish and Nordic languages and Director of Studies. His research focuses on language history and he has been particularly interested in how and why grammar has varied and changed throughout the history of Swedish. In his current research, he is studying the emergence of written language-specific constructions and conventions in the Middle Ages, which differ from spoken language.

Key resources for the Faculty's doctoral programmes

Every spring and autumn, the Doctoral School offers courses for the PhD students of the Faculty, which are also open to PhD students at other faculties and universities. As Research Officer, Mikael Kalm works to ensure that there is always an interesting range of courses.

He also manages the three conferences organised within the framework of the Doctoral School. These conferences are aimed at the Faculty's doctoral students. The first conference is for doctoral students at the beginning of their doctoral studies, the second for PhD students midway through their studies and the third for PhD students at the end of their studies.

Each autumn and spring semester, the Doctoral School announces quality assurance funds, which can be applied for to, for example, invite guest lecturers, organise workshops or organise doctoral conferences.

Enriching networks and popular courses

Mikael Kalm wants to encourage all doctoral students to get involved in the activities of the Doctoral School and take part in the rich and varied course programme. The courses and the Doctoral School programme give the doctoral students an opportunity to network and exchange ideas and to meet other doctoral students from both Stockholm University and other universities.

- The Doctoral School is a fantastic resource! The three conferences of the Doctoral School programme provide an amazing opportunity for doctoral students to meet and get an introduction to both doctoral studies and future careers, says Mikael Kalm.

He hopes that everyone considers the great resource that the Doctoral School is for the Faculty of Humanities and also encourages teachers to offer courses within the framework of the Doctoral School. If the course is relevant to PhD students from across the Faculty, there is every chance that it will be offered here. Many of the Doctoral School courses are very popular and attract many applicants. If you are a teacher and would like to offer a course within the framework of the Doctoral School, please contact Mikael Kalm!

–  I am very much looking forward to the interaction with teachers and researchers at the faculty, and to meeting the PhD students. It will be exciting to learn more about the university's activities and all the research that is conducted here!
