Om mig

Brian's research expertise focuses on internationalisation of higher education, international and comparative education, and equity and equality in education through learning assessments.

His teaching and academic supervision areas are in international and comparative education, higher education, and applied leadership.

Brian has been awarded a Wenner Gren Professorship (2021-23) at Stockholm University and subsequently a docentship at the university. In 2022, he was awarded innovative curriculum design in comparative and international education at CIES (USA). Previously, he has been a UNESCO Fellow, a Changjiang Scholar nominee (China), a recipient of the OPRS (Australia) and a DAAD Scholar (Germany).

He is currently working with an international team on a Nordpath project which involves the development of online courses focusing on intercultural communicative competencies for five Nordic universities.

Brian continues to research the Personalised Assessment Tool (PAT), an alternative online assessment tool he developed.  The tool aims to benchmark, track, and scaffold higher order skills (creativity, communication, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and reflective thinking) for any academic course or program. Piloted over several years, the PAT has demonstrated cultural dimensions to learning, along with institutional and disciplinary difference.

Brian has held a number of positions in comparative and international education over the years:

2016-           Secretary-General, GlobalCIE
2014-2016    Secretary-General, World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES)
2010-2016    UNE Council Member (Board of Trustees) - two elected terms
2007-2011    Editor-in-Chief, IEJ: Comparative Perspectives
