Description:

Chinese diplomat and philosopher Peng Chun Chang (1892-1957) was a Renaissance man and globetrotter who represented the Republic of China in the work on the UN Declaration of Human Rights.  Chang was vice-chairman of the Human Rights Commission responsible for drafting the UN Declaration (Eleanor Roosvelt was chairman). Chang played a very important role in the writing of this important text. He was perhaps the main author who fought most strongly for the document to be religiously neutral. In his presentation, Hans Ingvar Roth will talk about Chang's dramatic life and his contribution to one of the most important documents in world history.

Bio:

Hans Ingvar Roth is Professor of Human Rights at the Department of Asia, Middle East and Turkey Studies at Stockholm University and has previously worked at the Ministry of Justice and the OSCE.  His publications include the monographs “Mångfaldens gränser” (2010) and “Är religion en mänsklig rättighet?” (2012).  His latest book is “När Konfucius kom till FN” (2016) which will form the basis of this seminar presentation.
