About us and what we do

At the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism at Stockholm University we are approxinmately 160 staff members doing research on and teaching in the subjects Swedish, Scandinavian languages, Swedish as a second language, Swedish as a Foreign Language, Interpreting and Translation Studies, Bilingualism and second language acquisition for about 3,500 students every year. We offer Bachelor's programmes and Master's programmes, and approximately 70 courses each semester.

Swedish, Swedish as a second language and Scandinavian languages

The department has approximately 3,500 students every year. Out of these, about 800 study Swedish/Swedish as a second language/Scandinavian languages at basic level, and a handful study at advanced level. At the department there are approximately 35 doctoral students, whereof 15 in Scandinavian languages. Each semester we have 30–40 exchange students.

Programmes in Education

In collaboration with the Department of Language Education we educate 400–600 teacher students in Swedish courses each semester.

Swedish as a foreign language

Swedish as a foreign language is studied by approximately 200 students who need general entry requirements for higher education, and by approximately 500 exchange and guest students from other departments who take shorter courses in Swedish.

Bilingualism

Out of the total 3,500 students at the department, approx. 150 study bilingualism at the Centre for Research on Bilingualism. At the department there are approximately 35 doctoral students, whereof 15 in Bilingualism.

Interpreting and translation studies

Out of the total 3,500 students at the department, approx. 150 study interpreting and translation at the Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies. At the department there are approximately 35 doctoral students, whereof 4 in Translation studies.

Tisus

Tisus (Test In Swedish for University Studies) is taken by approximately 350 students in Sweden every semester, and we also arrange for it to be taken at approximately 70 locations abroad.
