This course is given free of charge to international students admitted to a course, exchange program, bachelor/master or an equivalent agreement containing at least 15 ECTS at Stockholm University meeting our requirements. Under certain conditions a student may need to pay a fee for taking this course. 

Is prior knowledge in the Swedish language required?

  • For admission to the beginner level, Course 1, no previous knowledge of Swedish is required. See below.
  • For admission to the intermediate and advanced courses, Course 2–6, a digital placement test has to be taken to establish which level you are allowed to enter. See below.
  • If you have passed a level during a previous semester you are eligible to continue to the next intermediate or advanced level without taking the placement test, under the condition that you still meet the requirements for applying to the course. See below: Registration for continuing students.


Please note that it is not possible to apply to one of these courses if you are not a student at Stockholm University, or will be studying less than 15 ECTS at Stockholm University during the semester you apply for. It is also not possible to apply for a higher level without taking the placement test or without passing the previous level.

Registration periods

Spring semesters Opens on 1 January
Autumn semesters Opens on 1 August


 

Registration for true beginners (Course 1)

Registration for the beginner course in the autumn semester 2021 is available between 1 August and 29 August. Course 1 in period 1 starts the first week of September. 

If you did not have the opportunity to sign up during the first registration period, you can register for course 1 in period 2 between 15 September and 6 October. Course 1 in period 2 starts on 11 October. 

N.B.
If you already applied for course 1 in period 2 during the first registration period, you don't have to sign up again. 

When you submit your application you will not receive a confirmation e-mail directly. The confirmation e-mail with information about the start date, how to select group and links to the schedules will be sent a few days before the course starts. Registrations are made continously throughout the registration period, so it may take a few days before you see the course in Ladok after submitting the application. 


N.B.
If you started course 1 in period 1, you will also be able to take course 2 during the same semester. Registration for course 2 in period 2 will open after the results on course 1 have been published in Ladok. 


 

Placement test – for students with previous knowledge of Swedish  (Course 2–6)

Registration for the intermediate and advanced courses in the autumn semester 2021 will be available between 1 August and 29 August. If you have previous knowledge of Swedish you need to take a digital placement test. The above link will take you directly to the test where you also fill out your application.

Registration for continuing students (Course 2–6)

If you pass the final exam of course 1 in period 1, you may register for course 2 during the same semester. Information on how to register will be published in an announcement on the course site in Athena after the results on course 1 have been published in Ladok.
 

If you have passed a certain level during the current semester, you can apply for the next level with your student account in Ladok via the last Swedish course you passed (under completed education). The application period always opens after all the exams have been corrected on each course and closes about two weeks before the courses start in the following semester. 

If you particpated in and passed a course further back in time, or are unable to apply via your student account, please contact the Student Office with your full name and student number.
