In audio-visual translation, the Swedish subtitles in a corpus of French suburban films are examined. The translation of dialects and native languages is analysed, emphasizing lexical innovations, characteristic morphosyntactic constructions, phonological features and cultural references. The study explores these phenomena within the framework of descriptive translation studies.

In literary translation, our research has investigated how French and Swedish readers interpret cultural-specific references (focusing on proper nouns and names of famous people) in original texts and translations. The interpretation of culture-specific references is largely governed by what Marie-Anne Paveau calls "prédiscours", that is, common interpretative frameworks that determine how a speech community perceives the world. The fact that the readers of the original texts and the readers of the translations have different prerequisites is reflected in how cultural-specific references are translated.
