Cinema Studies revisited: Contemporary and historical perspectives
First course in Master's Program in Cinema Studies. Can be applied for as an independent course even by students who do not study Cinema Studies. The course is compulsory for those admitted to the master's program in Cinema Studies.
The course examines a representative selection of theories regarding film and moving image media. The course sheds light on key theoretical traditions, concepts and methodological issues in a broad perspective, with a special focus on theories and methods for film history, contextual and cultural theoretical film analysis and media theoretical issues. By developing analytical ability and research skills, the courses train the students' critical thinking and provide good starting points for the individual degree project.

Course structure
Teaching format
The teaching consists of seminars and film screenings. Film screenings as well as seminars and associated oral presentations are mandatory
Assessment
The course is examined with two oral presentations and a take home exam.
For a passing grade on the course, the student must be able to:
account for and discuss theoretical theoretical traditions in Cinema Studies as well as current theories, concepts and methods in the field of Cinema Studies research;
discuss selected Cinema Studies problems in relation to a changing media landscape and in relation to current interdisciplinary research fields
apply and problematize the course's theoretical and methodological questions in their own independent analyzes.Grading scale: grading is done according to a goal-related seven-point grading scale: A = Excellent B = Very good
C = Good
D = Satisfactory
E = Sufficient
Fx = Insufficient F = Completely insufficient
c) The written grading criteria are communicated to the students at the start of the course. Announced goal-related grading criteria are binding.
d) Final grade: In order to pass the final grade on the course, a minimum grade of E is required on all examination assignments, as well as completed compulsory assignments.
If there are special reasons, the examiner may allow the student exemption from the obligation to participate in certain compulsory teaching or fulfillment of compulsory assignments. The student can then be assigned a compensation assignment.
e) For each course opportunity, at least two examination opportunities are offered. The academic year in which a course opportunity is missing is offered at least one examination opportunity.
The student who has received the grade Fx or F on an examination twice in a row by one and the same examiner has the right to have another examiner appointed at the next examination, unless there are special reasons to the contrary. Requests for this must be made to the department board.
Students who have received the lowest grade E may not undergo a re-examination for higher grades.
f) Supplementation can be allowed if the student is close to the limit for passing, ie received the grade Fx. Assignments must be submitted within two weeks after the need for completion has been announced by the examiner. For approved completion, the grades A-E are used.Examiner

Schedule
The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course. -
