Erasmus+ BIP Summer School

Traumatic memory and national identity across languages and cultures: Japan, Lebanon and modern-day Egypt.

Over the course of a six-week online part and a five-day in-person workshop, students and professors from the universities of Bologna, Stockholm, and Oslo engage in a multicultural dialogue.

This program focuses on how collective trauma and post/memory of the recent past are reworked in Japan, Lebanon, and Egypt, using graphic narratives (from corporate comics to alternatively produced graphic novels) as the main lens. It interconnects Japanese and Middle Eastern/Arabic Studies, as well as trauma/disaster research and visual narratology/comics studies. Our department is represented by one BA student, six MA students, and one PhD student, as well as Elena Chiti and Jaqueline Berndt as lecturers and facilitators.

Part 1 (online): 15 April – 2 June 2024
Part 2 (at Bologna University): 17 – 21 June 2024
