Information on how to apply to the International Master's Programme in Performance Studies

How to apply

Where do I apply?

All applications and admissions to Swedish higher education must be done via universityadmissions.se or its Swedish-language version antagning.se. Any documents sent to us directly will be disregarded.

Which documents do I need to upload to UniversityAdmissions/Antagning.se?

If you obtained your upper secondary school education and/or bachelor’s degree outside of Sweden, you need to upload your degree certificate(s).

You also need to upload the following documents:

  1. an English summary of your bachelor’s thesis/degree project, its main objective and line of argumentation, the theoretical framework and the drawn conclusion (no more than two pages)
  2. a short letter where you outline your intentions and ambitions for our International Master’s Programme in Performance Studies (no more than one page)

Do I meet the English requirements?

Depending on your upper secondary education, you might meet the English requirements already, or you might need to provide other proof, such as an internationally recognized language proficiency certificate, to prove that you are eligible.

You need to prove that your English proficiency corresponds to the level of Swedish upper secondary school course English 6. Please refer to UniversityAdmissions’ homepage to find out how your country’s education corresponds to that course, or which alternatives are open to you.

Does my university degree meet your requirements?

You need to hold a bachelor’s degree (at least 180 ECTS) in a discipline within the humanities or social sciences. Please refer to Universityadmissions.se's general guidelines for degree requirements.

To be eligible for the International Master’s Programme in Performance Studies, your studies also need to include a degree project of at least 10 ECTS. If your degree does not include such a project, or if your degree project equals less than 10 ECTS, you may still be eligible if you have completed a sufficiently complex project similar to a degree project.

Can I apply during my final year of B.A. studies?

Yes, but you need to document this. Find out how at the final year of bachelor's studies page. If you do not fulfill the entry requirements by the time your application is handled, but you have shown that you are on track to complete your B.A. studies by the time the programme starts, you will be conditionally admitted. In that case, you will have to contact us at some point and prove that you finished your B.A. studies. Don’t worry about that right now, though. You will receive a welcome letter from us that tells you what to do if you haven’t been able to prove your eligibility yet.

Why do I need a degree project of at least 10 ECTS? And why specifically 10 ECTS?

In Sweden, most bachelor's degrees include a degree project or thesis of 15 ECTS, which adequately prepares students for the kinds of assignments given within the master’s programme. However, this isn’t necessarily the norm in other countries or in disciplines that are less focused on the production of written text than most fields in the humanities or social sciences. Since our programme has a strong theoretical focus, students whose education hasn’t focused on theoretical and analytical writing and project management may struggle to follow the programme’s courses. We have found that students who have completed a degree project of 10 ECTS or more are significantly more likely to succeed in our Master’s programme.

I don’t have a degree project, or a degree project that equals less than 10 ECTS. Can I still apply?

Absolutely. But you need to prove that you have the necessary qualifications. If your degree includes several small projects that add up to 10 ECTS or more, or if you have completed projects of sufficient scope outside of your degree studies, please state so clearly, and submit thorough documentation of the project(s), its/their results, and scope.
We cannot make any judgments regarding your qualifications before the actual admissions process, but here are some general guidelines as to what we are looking for:

  • A degree project of 10 ECTS is a written thesis or other well-documented project.
  • In study time, 10 ECTS equals a period just below 7 weeks of full-time studies (1,5 ECTS = one 40-hour week).
  • A degree project such as the thesis included in our bachelor’s course in Theatre Studies is an independent research work that is written with the help of a supervisor. It includes an introduction, a literature review, a section on theory/methodology, an independent study using that theory/methodology, and a summary.
  • A degree project shows that the degree holder is able to plan and carry out research or similar relevant work independently, and to document the results of that work according to institutional standards.

My degree project isn’t in English, how will you judge it?

Please include an English summary and, if possible, an abstract of your project in your application. The summary can also be in Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish.

We take into consideration the project’s quality. In case we cannot make a decision solely based on the summary you provided, we will also look at the project grade you received.

Should I email my documents to you?

No. As stated above, all applications and admissions to Swedish higher education must be done via universityadmissions.se. Please make sure you upload all necessary documents there. We cannot take into consideration any documents that are sent directly to us.
