Meeting in Belfast – towards future research collaborations

A group of researchers from the Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS), the Department of Social Work, and the Department of Special Education, Stockholm University, were invited to Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, on September 10–14, 2024.

The purpose of the trip was to follow up on discussions that were held during a visit to Stockholm University in Spring 2024 with Gillian Shorter, School of Psychology and Co-Director of the Drug and Alcohol Research Network, and Michael Brown, School of Nursing and Midwifery, both at Queen's University Belfast.

The meeting in Belfast, hosted by Brown and Shorter, included productive discussions on possible joint research efforts in the areas of complex needs of children and adolescents and vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities or substance use disorders, including different policy and care/service solutions. Opportunities to develop more sustainable research collaborations were discussed with the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) and other senior leaders at Queen's University Belfast.

Research projects presented

Research in Public Health Sciences/Social Work and Special Education at Stockholm University was also presented and discussed at two research seminars, involving also the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Belfast.

We are grateful for the opportunities to learn more about Belfast during a site visit to the Extern Needle and Syringe Exchange Program, an afternoon at the Titanic Museum, and other interesting sites.

If you want more information, please contact Jessica Storbjörk (PHS), Eva Samuelsson (Social Work) and/or Jude Tah (Special Education) at Stockholm University.
