Fashion as an Industry
Fashion as an Industry 7,5 credits is a mandatory part of Master's Programme in Fashion Studies. Open for non programme students as a Free Standing Course. Students admitted to Master's Programme in Fashion Studies are automatically registered by the Department.
The course treats the historical background, growth and transition of the global fashion industry over the last 200 years, focusing on the relationship between production, distribution and consumption of fashion and fashion goods. Three major developments are central to this process: the industrial revolution during the 18th and 19th centuries, the deregulation of national textile and garment industries in Western Europe during the 1970s, and the current deregulation of textile import quotas within the EU and USA.

Course structure
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated their ability to:
• Analyse, compare and evaluate theories and perspectives from social sciences on the fashion industry
• Apply these theories and perspectives on scientific discussions as well as on contemporary phenomenon
• Take an independent and critical approach to different theories in relation to the historical development of the fieldTeaching format
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars, workshops and oral presentations. All teaching takes place in English and is mandatory.
Assessment
The course is examined through a take home exam.
