Drew Szabo
About me
Drew Szabo completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2022. Drew has experience researching the sources, fate and impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the Australian environment. He specialises in the extraction and quantification of emerging contaminants from complex biological matrices with a range of analytical techniques. Drew was the Chair of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Asia Pacific Student Advisory Council between 2021 - 2022.

Research
My area of research is the use of ambient ionisation techniques coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry to demonstrate rapid quantification of unknown chemicals in recycled textiles. Techniques including desorption electrospray ionisation (DESI), paper spray ionisation (PSI), matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization (MALDI) will be optimised and validated with advanced machine learning algorithms to detect compounds with predictable human toxicity. This project is under the supervision of Associate Professor Anneli Kruve and Professor Aji Mathew with support from Formas.
