About my research

In my PhD project I investigate dressing practices of children's outerwear in larger preschool cloakrooms. I am at my third year and have recently finished my field work. It occured at two preschools, with cloakrooms where all or most of all children dressed och undressed their outerwear. I have interviewed preschool staff, caregivers and done walking tours with the children, where they got to show me what they do when they are in the cloakroom.

Research

The purpose of the thesis is to examine undressing and dressing practices that are done and made possible in the preschool hall. The focus of the research is on how the undressing and dressing practices of large preschool halls are organized and how the ongoing practices of children, educators and guardians make the preschool hall. In the thesis, undressing and dressing practices are analyzed and interpreted through the practice theory of Theodore Schatzki and Henri Lefebvre's theories of socially produced space. The dissertation takes its methodological point of departure in Annemarie Mol's praxiographic method for investigating practices in the preschool hall. The field work has been carried out at two large preschools in an urban environment. Other important concepts are place, space and belonging.
