Research project Algorithms in the Workplace

A legal doctrinal study (PhD project) with the overarching aim to analyze legal aspects of the use of algorithms in the employment context in relation to co-determination and the employer’s decision-making.

Algorithmic management, sometimes defined as the use of computer algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques to manage human employees, is gaining attention in the field of labor law. Through the collection of vast amounts of data about the employees and their performance, this form of management can be used to automate large portions of the managerial decision-making process. Surveillance in the workplace is not a new phenomenon, but the use of algorithms in the workplace is enabling the collection of previously unseen quantities of data, with potential risks to the integrity and stress-levels of workers. This PhD project is a legal doctrinal study with the overarching aim to analyze legal aspects of the use of algorithms in the employment context in relation to co-determination and the employer’s decision-making.
