Research project ALL-INCLUSIVE? Cohesion and exclusion in work-life change

This research program examines cohesion and exclusion in working life in the wake of long-term structural change. As labor markets are transformed by rising skill requirements and service sector expansion, the conditions and opportunities of both traditionally marginal groups and formerly established worker categories may change considerably.

We uncover the contours of this social change and assess its consequences. Important outcomes to be examined in six sub-projects of the program include employment opportunities for marginal groups (youth, immigrants, the low-educated); job progression among workers at different levels of the job structure; physical health, mental well-being and family ties across the life-course among women and men with and without work; and political reactions to work-life change in different population groups.

We expand knowledge on three fronts: through quantitative analysis, large-scale description and qualitative interpretation. The empirical backbone of the proposed research is data from the Swedish Level of Living Surveys (LNU), one of the longest running longitudinal panels in the world with a new wave in 2020. We also make extensive use of data from other Swedish as well as international surveys and Swedish administrative registers.

We are a team of sociologists at Stockholm University with strong links to scholars in several other disciplines. We have considerable expertise in working with both survey and register data, and have initiated cooperation with researchers having complementary skills in qualitative data collection and analysis. We devote substantial resources to public outreach, knowledge dissemination and collaboration with external stakeholders. The program contributes to our understanding of the mechanisms that generate inequality in working life, as well as in society at large, thus suggesting ways forward to positive change.
