Research project Birgitta of Sweden: the texts in Old Swedish

The aim of the project is a critical edition of the entire Old Swedish text corpus of Birgitta’s (1303–1373) texts, both her revelations and other shorter texts. An additional goal is to provide transcriptions of all manuscripts including fragmentary material.

The Revelations by St Birgitta of Sweden, received by the future saint and transmitted into writing during many years in the fourteenth century have always fascinated through their religious and political contents and their drastic and moving style and imagery. The revelations are important sources to our understanding of the spirituality, religion, language and literature of the Swedish Middle Ages. The project aims at a new commented critical edition of Birgitta of Sweden’s all texts in Old Swedish.
