A self-assessment instrument is tested together with other tools for teachers and students. An instrument for classroom observations is developed and validated. There is an interest among teachers in tools to use in preventive special educational efforts at group and organizational level. These methods are asked for by professionals in student health teams, in order to develop the quality of inclusive learning environments.

Project description

The project develops a classroom observation instrument that can be used to support learners with special educational needs in inclusive settings, and to prevent students' learning difficulties and low engagement, through targeting the quality of interactions and the socio-emotional climate in the classroom.

The study's hypothesis is that the reforms introduced in the school system have changed the school's core values, putting more focus on management and organization than on children's development and well-being.

The project builds upon a theory-based model of social climate synthetizing a framework on values, basic needs and the characteristics of teacher-student relationships associated with responsiveness, trust, creativity and achievement.

The overarching aim is to engage teachers' leadership in shaping environments that are responsive to students' needs and interests and stimulate learning for all students, including students with special educational needs. The specific aims of the project are to address the model's content validity in establishing categories; to do a pilot testing of the classroom observation instrument, to evaluate its functioning; to test the psychometric properties of the observation instrument, and to develop research-practice collaboration models.

The project has a mixed-method approach and includes collegial evaluation, classroom observations, instrument development, and observations of students' learning potentials and strengths.
