Research project Legitimacy in Pay-setting

The overall aim of the research project "Legitimacy in Pay-setting: A Psychological Perspective on Work-related Pay-setting and Employee-related Pay-setting" has been to contribute to more secure knowledge about pay setting and wage formation in the private sector in Sweden.

The project has studied the significance of pay setting by examining employees’ experiences of pay setting, managers’ and employees’ experiences of justice in pay setting, what different factors in pay setting can mean for motivation and performance, and investigated the importance of pay-related factors for such outcomes in relation to different work environment factors.

The project was based on both survey and interview data. Longitudinal survey studies were conducted among a nationally representative sample of employees in the private sector in Sweden (via Statistics Sweden) and through studies of several companies that have worked to further develop procedures of individual pay setting. The project was also based on focus group interviews among employees, managers, company management and union representatives at the selected companies.

The results of the project have been reported in scientific journals and in a number of student projects carried out within the project. The participants have presented results at a number of seminars and in the media.
