Research project Machine translation and viewer comprehension and experience

Machine translation and viewer comprehension and experience: a reception study of machine translated and post-edited interlingual subtitles’ effect on viewer comprehension and experience.

Machine translation and post-editing have recently been implemented in the workflow of subtitling. The nature of these new subtitles differs from earlier subtitles translated by humans. I aim to investigate if these subtitles have any effect on viewers’ comprehension and/or experience of anglophone TV series with Swedish subtitles. Any potential effect will be investigated by conducting a reception study with hearing, hard of hearing (and if possible, deaf) viewers by showing them a subtitled video clip. The participants’ comprehension and experience will be tested by using eye tracking and asking questions about the video clip.

This study can contribute with new information about different viewer groups’ comprehension and experience of subtitled content and possibly determine if these new subtitles adhere to the purpose of subtitling, i.e., to make content in a program understandable for viewers.
