Research project Naptime in Preschool 1910–2013 : Visual materials and visual methodology
The aim of this thesis is to explore preschool naptime during the period 1910–2013 through visual materials, films and photographs produced by different actors for various purposes at various historical times, and to develop a visual methodology that works with complex visual materials.
The study shows, among other things, how young children with a limited spoken language have the ability to use a variety of semiotic resources to create their own social life within the framework of an institutional routine. The empirical material in the study consists of video ethnographic recordings from everyday life in preschool. It has a special focus on the time of day that in preschool activities is seen as care routines and / or spaces between the educators' didactically goal-oriented activities.
