Research project Regional planning for sustainable land-use

For many years, research has stressed the importance of regional planning for addressing challenges related to sustainable development.

However, planning studies often refer to a theory-practice gap, which is specifically apparent in Sweden, since traditionally the academic focus has almost solely been centered on land-use planning practices within municipalities.

The main goal of this project is thus to clarify the actual conditions, possibilities and limitations for regional planning to promote sustainable land-use development. We will investigate how and to what extent regional planning is able to promote different forms of densification (or to avoid densification where it is deemed to be unsustainable, for instance) and to coordinate related land-use conflicts in different urban and rural areas in the Stockholm region.
