Research project Schools' organizational characteristics and adolescent alcohol use

School is a context of central importance in young people's lives, and also an environment that can contribute to shaping behaviour.

Adolescence is a sensitive period characterized by major changes. Alcohol habits adopted during this time in life have been shown to have both immediate and long-term consequences for the individual's development.

The aim of this project is to investigate in what ways schools' characteristics are related to students' alcohol consumption.

Project description

Project description: Adolescence is a sensitive period characterized by major changes. Alcohol habits adopted during this time in life have been shown to have both immediate and long-term consequences for the individual's development. Knowledge of risk factors for young people's alcohol consumption and how such risk factors can be countered is therefore important. Previous research on adolescent alcohol consumption has largely focused on risk and protective factors in the individual and within the family.

However, young people's behaviour is also influenced by other social contexts. School is a context of central importance in young people's lives, and also an environment that can contribute to shaping behaviour. Based on the research on so-called "effective schools", the aim of this project is to investigate the extent to which teacher-rated characteristics of schools are related to adolescent alcohol consumption. More specifically, we focus on the compensatory role of schools. Knowledge of how schools' characteristics are related to students' alcohol consumption is not only significant from a theoretical and analytical perspective, but can also form a basis for preventive work.
