Research project Stød in Danish Nonce Words

This project investigates the prosodic phenomenon stød in Danish. The project consists of three studies with nonce words – two production studies and one perception study. The three studies focus on either stød in relation to the position of the stressed syllable, syllabic structure or morphological context.

Stød is a prosodic phenomenon in Danish that can occur in syllables with a long vowel or a short vowel followed by a sonorant. However, a syllable being able to occur with stød does not entail that it will, leading to the question of what determines the assignment of stød.

The aim of this project is to study the productivity of stød by investigating what generalizations speakers transfer to nonce words. In the two production studies, speakers are recorded when reading nonce words. The nonce words are constructed to test different generalizations, for example the position of the stressed syllable, or different morphological contexts. In the perception study, the participants listen to and rate nonce words with different syllabic structures.
