Research project Swedish Sign Language Corpus
The Swedish Sign Language Corpus is a database for the Swedish sign language. The corpus is produced by sign language speakers to facilitate teaching and research on sign language.
The purpose of our extensive project Swedish Sign Language Corpus is to publish a collection of texts, a corpus, in sign language. It should provide a picture of what sign language sentences look like, but also contribute to new signs and variants to the Swedish Sign Language Dictionary and be used to develop teaching materials.
When sign language texts are made available in this way, it becomes possible to present and analyze characters, sentences or entire texts in language teaching. Corpus surveys and the possibility of analyzing sign language grammar are of great importance for future sign language research, not least for areas such as sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, translation studies and cultural studies.
The corpus material is freely available with the web-based corpus tool STS-corpus, this for use in teaching, research and sign language lexicography.
Project description
This project was funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) between 2009 and 2011. During these years, recordings were made with 42 informants aged 20 to 82 from different parts of Sweden. The recordings contain a variety of free conversations and retellings of stories, picture series and comedies.
The recorded material was annotated and transcribed using the annotation tool ELAN. The tool is used for annotation of recorded material and for linking transcriptions to digitized video and audio material. The annotation conventions are continuously updated.
