Research project The emotional appeal of The Sweden Democrats
In the current political debate, law and order is one of the most politically debated issues. These issues are also of great concern for voters. In this research project, I analyse the election campaign of The Sweden Democrats and, particularly, which emotions these campaign messages encourage and generate.
I an ongoing post doc project, I study the emotional appeal of The Sweden Democrats (SD) in the criminal policy debate. I combine two kinds of materials: the election campaigns of the party and qualitative interviews with young “ordinary citizens”. My study aims to analyse the emotional appeal of the party from two different angles: from “above” and from “below”.
Firstly, by analysing documents from the election campaign of SD, my intention is to capture how certain emotions are confirmed and encouraged through these political messages. Secondly, in order to understand how criminal policy messages are interpreted by people who receive the messages, I will conduct interviews with ordinary citizens in two Swedish cities.
