Stockholm university

Research in this section is spanning from Korean language, literature and culture to Korean politics.

Since early on a characteristic feature of Korean studies at Stockholm University has been to take both states on the Korean peninsula into consideration and recent research projects are continuing to work within this perspective. Research in Korean politics is focusing on inter-Korean relations and on human rights in the ROK since 1987, applying theories of democratic consolidation. Studies in Korean literature and culture are looking into the multifaceted, innovative trends in contemporary South Korea and, on the other hand, attempt to fill in existing gaps in the history of North Korean literature and culture. Informed by cultural-historical, comparatistic and philological approaches, Korean literature of the pre-modern as well as modern periods is positioned in relation to other East Asian literatures and world literature.

Courses and programmes

Beginner courses in Korean are offered every autumn semester, as part of the six semesters required to attain a bachelor’s degree. All courses are offered as freestanding courses.

We offer a few freestanding courses at the master's level. Some of the courses are part of the Master's Programme in Asian Studies and are not available for application as a stand-alone course.

Doctoral studies

The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies offers third cycle studies (Doctoral studies) in the main area: Asian languages and cultures.

Doctoral studies in Asian languages and cultures consist of area studies with the focus on one or more of the main language and culture areas Japan, China and Korea.

The multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary PhD studies are characterised in that a substantial part of the material consists of both primary and secondary sources in the source language determined by the thesis project.
