We conduct research into various aspects of the English language, from its structure, history, varieties, and phonological features, to societal aspects of language use and practical applications of English linguistics.

For example, two broad research areas – World Englishes and academic uses of English – reflect the current status and roles of English in the world. Our researchers draw on a wide of range of theoretical frameworks and empirical techniques, including qualitative and quantitative sociolinguistic methods, corpus linguistics, conversation analysis, and philology
