Two areas of research that recently have received attention in ethnology are those that have to do with studies of the material (materiality studies) and visual culture (visual culture or visual studies).

The first line of research emphasizes that agents are not only human. Objects and the physical environment also exert agency through their own forms of influence. Visual culture in a similar way explores the great importance that images and visual worlds have for people's opportunities to create meaning and orient themselves in life.
