Research in Finnish takes place mainly in the areas of language, literature and culture.

The research within the Finnish department is focused on Finnish language in Finland and Sweden as well as Finnish and Sweden-Finnish literature and culture. The didactic perspectives within these areas are also represented. The main research topics are Sweden-Finnish and Sweden-Finnish culture, sociolinguistics, Finnish as part of multilingualism in school and in literature, minority languages, simple Finnish, Finnish political discourse, Finnish language history and language and literature didactics.
