Religion, politics and violence is a broad field of research that includes a multitude of religious traditions in both history and the present.
Religion has been used as a political tool in different ways throughout history. In this research field religion is studied from the perspective of different interpretations and practices in various historical contexts, from the days of antiquity to the present, where, for example, Islamic movements and individuals call for violence to reach their goals, to the Buddhist Myanmar, where religious minorities are persecuted. Scholars within this field study of religion is understood in different manners as a tool to motivate and legitimize interpretative authority and positionings of power.
