Research subject Middle Eastern and North African Studies
Research in this section covers various areas of study related to the Middle East and North Afria, ranging from Arabic and Semitic languages and literature to area studies, including politics, economy, history, sociology, anthropology, among others.
In language studies, research is conducted in Semitic Linguistics, Lexicography and Computational Linguistics.
The research in Arabic literature, is mainly focused on Modern Arabic fiction and includes different fields and thematics such as Young Adult Literature, Exile, Women and feminism, Mortality.
In area studies, the research covers the broad topics of identity, gender, nationalism and national belonging, minorities and migration, and human rights through disciplines as diverse as history, political sciences, philosophy, and religious studies.

Within the subject area Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures can choose two study paths:
- Arabic with Middle Eastern and North African Studies
- Middle Eastern and North Africa Studies
Doctoral studies
Doctoral studies in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures consist of area studies with the focus on one or more of the main language and culture areas in the Middle East and North Africa.
The doctoral program consist of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary area studies, and are characterised in that a substantial part of the material consists of both primary and secondary sources in the source language determined by the thesis project.
