Epistemology belongs to the classical fields of theoretical philosophy. The subject is devoted to the study of knowledge as well as other epistemic phenomena such as justification, understanding and defeat

Examples of questions raised within epistemology are: What is knowledge? Does knowledge have foundations? What contextual aspects does knowledge have? Are there beliefs justified independently of experience? How does testimony transmit knowledge? Is self-knowledge privileged compared to other kinds of knowledge? Is understanding a special kind of knowledge or an epistemic state in its own right? Do the skeptical scenarios such as us living in the Matrix challenge our purported knowledge of the external world?

Members of the department who conduct research within epistemology include: Conrad Bakka (moral epistemology), Kathrin Glüer-Pagin (epistemic reasons, rationality, perception, knowledge resistance), Paul Kindvall Gorbov (formal epistemology), Anandi Hattiangadi (epistemic norms and normativity, formal and social epistemology), Sören Häggqvist (modal epistemology), Mikael Janvid (defeat, understanding, African epistemology), Hanna Möller Kalpak (formal), Henrik Lagerlund (skepticism), Anders Schoubye (scientific testimony), H. Orri Stefánsson (formal/Bayesian), Miira Tuominen (ancient epistemology), Åsa Wikforss (knowledge resistance, epistemic reasons, self-knowledge, other minds).
