One of the research areas of Musicology and Theatre Studies is opera and music theater, which is analysed from an interdisciplinary and cross-aesthetic perspective that puts focus on the interplay of text, music, staging and musical-scenic performance.

The music is studied as dramatic expression and the singing as vocal acting. Historical as well as contemporary works, artists, performances, conventions and tendencies are approached from dramaturgical, performance-practical, phenomenological, philosophical, political, sociohistorical, postcolonial and other perspectives.
