Middle Eastern and North African Politics and Economy
The course offers an introduction to the political and economic landscape of the Middle East and North Africa and addresses the potential for democratization and economic development in the region.
The course deals with both the politics and economy of the region, as well as earlier research and central theories on the subject.
The course will give an overview of the region’s economies. We will move from the oil-rich Gulf countries to impoverished states. Focus is on economic development and reform in modern time, industrialization, diversification, strategic rents, political reforms and international pressure. Emphasis is put on the various development strategies that the countries of the region have undergone in modern times.
