Gender and Geography

The course introduces key concepts in gender geography through feminist geographies and methodologies, unequal power relations and gender processes (femininity, masculinity and sexuality).

The course is offered freestanding and is also part of Human Geography II – course package Population and Gender, 30 HECs, and elective in the second semester within the Bachelor's Programme in Human Geography – Society, Environment and Global Processes, 180 HECs, and within, among others, the Bachelor's Programme in Urban and Regional Planning, 180 HECs, the Bachelor's Programme in Geography, 180 HECs, and the Bachelor's Programme in Global Development, 180 HECs.

  • Course structure

    Local and international contexts are used to illustrate how gender geographies are constructed and maintained with various spatial and time-based outcomes. Students are invited to critically analyse how gender permeates everyday life through a series of hands-on exercises in and around everyday spaces and places.

    Teaching format

    Obligatory teaching is introduction, lectures, exercises and workshop.

    Assessment

    Examination takes place through take-home exams, assignments and oral presentations.
