More about CNS

Coins from the Viking-Age found in Sweden is a project under The Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. The acronym of the project is CNS based on the title of the publication.

CNS  CORPUS NUMMORUM SAECULORUM IX-XI QUI IN SUECIA REPERTI SUNT

Catalogue of Coins from the Viking Age found in Sweden

The work is carried out at Numismatiska Forskningsgruppen (Stockholm Numismatic Institute). All Viking-Age finds from Sweden will be published in the CNS series. So far c. 259,000 coins have been found. Nine printed volumes were published 1975-2010.

Numbering

Every province has a number in the series. Within each subvolume every find has a number. Every coin in a find has its own number. These numbers should be used when citing a find or a coin. For example 1.22.3.10 refers to province 1 (Gotland), subvolume 22 (Roma parish), find 3 (Lilla Väller) and coin no. 10. This references applies both to the text and the illustration.

Province Parish No. of coins Year
1.1 Gotland Akebäck-Atlingbo 7,082 1975
1.2   Bäl-Buttle 11,437 1977
1.3   Dalhem-Etelhem 11,662 1982
1.4   Fardhem-Fröjel 7,951 1982
3.1 Skåne Åhus-Grönby 4,142 1985
3.4   Maglarp-Ystad 4,862 1987
4.1 Blekinge Bräkne-Hoby - Sölvesborg 6,299 2010
8.1 Östergötland Älvestad-Viby 2,460 1983
16.1 Dalarna Falun-Rättvik 1,821 1979
Total     57,716

Since the first CNS volume was published in 1975 an additional c. 46,200 coins have been found in Sweden. In order to be able to accommodate future finds and for the volumes not to be too large, the future volumes will each cover c. 2,000-4,000 coins (based on finds known today). However, for various reasons the actual number will in some cases be much higher.

A map showing the Swedish provinces, and the numbers they have been assigned in the CNS series are available on our Swedish site

PDF-files with listings of finds will be found on our Swedish website. A common PDF-file with introduction, explanations, literature etc. is available in English.

"S" after a digit means that it is a supplement to an already printed volume. The supplementary volumes will contain revisions, additions and new finds. All specimens will be illustrated. As it is not possible to include too much information in each PDF, each volume can consist of a number of PDFs.
