Experiments are used to investigate a research question and possibly to prove a causal relationship. They are used in a number of areas, for example in medicine and in the manufacturing industry but are getting more and more common in behavioural sciences and in economy.

For an experiment, it is important to plan how to conduct it: the choice of the “design” of the experiment. By choosing the design in a good way, better answers can afterwards be given to the research question. Historically, sir Ronald A. Fisher (1890-1962) was the first statistician to formalize the design of experiments, starting from agricultural experiments.

Statistical methods can improve the design of planned experiments. In our research group, we are dealing with these methods to obtain better, or even optimal designs. We are developing methods further to analyze data from experiments.
