Environmental risk assessments should be made for departments where chemicals are handled. There are several aspects to consider in the risk assessment, including hazardous waste management, air pollution from fume hoods to the outside air, and accidents/spills when storing chemicals.

All personnel working in laboratories where chemical products and/or biotechnical organisms are handled should know what to do in case of an emergency. There should be procedures in place for handling spills, and the use of safety equipment should be practised continuously. A list of people to contact in case of an emergency should be easily accessible, and the appointed coordinator should have a general idea of which chemicals are stored in which laboratories. In case of an incident that may cause harm to human health or the environment (e.g. a fire or major spill), a report must be made to the Environment and Health Administration via the environment officer at the Technical Support Office.
