History

Biology was one of the first subjects taught when Stockholm University was founded. Lectures in botany and zoology were held as early as the spring of 1879. The first full-time teacher at the university taught zoology. A broader biology education was developed in the 1970s, partly due to the development of new fields within the biology subject, and as a result of society's needs and changes in the labor market. The new education required a lot of cooperation between the then many departments of biology, which led to the creation of the Department of Biology Education.
