Master's programmes within Biology

We offer ten programmes spanning the breath of biology.

Biodiversity and systematics

Be part of the new generation of taxonomists with the expertise and skills to take action against biodiversity loss. You will gain a broad knowledge of living organisms, their relationships and learn specific identification and research skills to be able to follow a career in the conservation of biodiversity for the future.

Biology

This programme is a great opportunity to gain a broad education and develop your own direction. You can choose courses in biology covering subjects from cell and molecular biology through to ecology and behaviour. You can also develop a multidisciplinary education by combining other subjects, including the humanities and social sciences.

Ecology and biodiversity

This programme will give you essential knowledge to understand nature’s complex connections and the relationships between species, their environment and climate. Evolutionary ecology and experimental design are important aspects of a programme where you will have opportunities to study empirical ecology in both the field and laboratory.

Ethology

This programme offers you a solid grounding in ethology as well as deeper insight into the latest research in the subject. The evolution, genetics and function of behaviour form the foundation. You will gain skills and experience in research methods and analytical techniques, which open up a wide variety of career possibilities.

Genetic and molecular plant science (paused)

The programme will give you an intimate knowledge of plant biology and plant research. If you are interested in environmental protection, green biotechnology, novel systems for sustainable agriculture or want to learn about the opportunities and risks of gene-modified organisms (GMOs) this is the subject for you.

The programme will not be offered starting autumn 2024.

Marine biology

On our Master’s Programme in Marine Biology you will learn about the rich marine ecosystems in the Baltic sea and oceans beyond. The programme aims to provide an in-depth theoretical background in marine ecology along with applied practical training, to give you a range of skills and a competetive edge.

Molecular Life Sciences

This programme offers broad training at the frontier of research. Molecular life sciences aim is to understand the structure, function and regulation of biological systems from molecular to organism level. This rapidly growing field, seeing extensive technological advances and emerging new sub-disciplines, opens up a broad spectrum of career opportunities.

Molecular techniques in life science

The programme fosters graduates for a professional research career in life science. It has a strong focus on molecular techniques for disease therapies and diagnostic tools, coupled with substantial training in data analysis (bioinformatics and programming). The programme is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, KTH and Stockholm University at the Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm.
